Thavorn Beach Village Resort & Spa, Phuket: An Honest Review
Most of this site covers properties where wellness is the product — you book a program, follow a schedule, and leave with a plan. Thavorn Beach Village Resort & Spa is a different proposition, and it fills a gap I get asked about constantly: what if you want yoga, a good spa and a healthy rhythm to your days, but you also want a holiday, and you are traveling with people who have no interest in a cleanse?
Thavorn is a 185-room resort spread across roughly 25 acres of beautiful gardens on its own private bay near Kamala. It runs a daily program of yoga, Muay Thai, tai chi and Thai cooking classes at no extra charge, has a spa that won Best Luxury Wellness Spa at the 2024 World Luxury Spa Awards, a coral conservation center, and a house reef 300 meters offshore you can snorkel or freedive. It is also an older property with some genuine problems that the booking sites gloss over, and I am going to cover those in detail.
I know this property better than most on this site. I have visited Thavorn many times over the years, and for a stretch I came weekly for a yoga class on the beach. That is a different kind of familiarity than a one-week review stay produces — you see a place in low season and high, on still mornings and in the rain, and you notice what holds up and what does not.

This is a wellness-adjacent resort, not a retreat. For a particular kind of traveler that is exactly the right thing.

Why this resort belongs on a wellness site
The reason I keep coming back to Thavorn when people ask for recommendations is that it solves the hardest booking problem in Phuket wellness: the mixed-interest trip.
Dedicated retreats are built for one person with one goal. If you want to fast and your partner wants to drink a beer by a pool, a detox center makes one of you miserable. If you want daily yoga and your children want a waterslide, the same applies. Thavorn is one of a small number of Phuket properties where a genuinely wellness-oriented holiday and a completely conventional one can happen side by side without either party compromising.
The daily activity program is the mechanism. Yoga, Muay Thai, tai chi and Thai cooking classes run as part of the resort schedule rather than as paid add-ons, which means you can build a structured, active week — morning yoga, afternoon Muay Thai, a cooking class, a spa treatment, a swim at the lagoon pool — while everyone else does whatever they like. You get the rhythm of a retreat without the commitment, the cost, or the dietary restriction.
The second reason is the setting. Twenty-five acres of botanical gardens, a private bay framed by forested hills, an orchid garden and ponds, and a 600-meter beach that essentially only resort guests reach. The ambient stress level of this property is low in a way that genuinely matters if you came to decompress. There is no beach-club sound system and no jet ski tours.
The setting and the layout you need to understand
Thavorn sits on Nakalay Bay at the southern end of Kamala, a crescent of shoreline with green hills on both sides. It is around five minutes by car to Kamala village, fifteen to Patong, and twenty-five to Karon and Kata. The airport is thirty-five to forty-five minutes depending on traffic.
The property divides into four zones, and which one you book materially changes your holiday:
| Zone | Terrain | What it means for you |
| SINTR — Beach | Flat | Beachfront cottages, closest to the sand and the pier. Easiest access. |
| THARA — Lagoon | Flat | Rooms opening directly onto the lagoon pool. Best for families. |
| VANA — Garden | Flat to gentle | Set inside the botanical gardens. Quietest, most greenery. |
| KIRI — Hillside | Steep | Sea-view suites reached by funicular or stairs. Best views, most hassle. |
The funicular, and why it matters more than it sounds
The hillside suites are reached by a jungle funicular (cable car) that climbs through the trees. It is a genuinely charming piece of the property and the views from the top are the best on site — panoramic ocean, forested slopes, the bay below.

It is also slow, and it is the only alternative to a substantial flight of stairs. If you are the kind of traveler who pops back to the room three times a day, or you are managing a knee, a hip, a stroller or a toddler, this will shape your week more than the view compensates for. Several reviewers across sites make the same observation about the wait.
Booking advice: If mobility, balance or young children are a factor, book in the beach, lagoon or garden zones and treat the hillside view as something you visit rather than live in. If you are fit, traveling light and want the best outlook on the property, the hillside suites are the nicest rooms Thavorn has.
The 3,500 square meter lagoon swimming pool
This is the thing people remember. A free-form lagoon pool of roughly 3,500 square meters, described variously as the largest in Phuket and one of the largest in Southeast Asia. I cannot verify which superlative is accurate and I would not put weight on either, but the practical reality is not in dispute: it is big enough that it never feels crowded, it winds through the grounds rather than sitting as a rectangle, and several room categories open straight onto it.
For anyone whose exercise of choice is swimming, this matters a great deal — and given the beach caveat below, it matters more here than it would elsewhere.

The beach: the caveat that should decide your booking
I want to be completely straightforward about this, because it is the single most common source of disappointment at Thavorn and the booking sites bury it.
The private Nakalay Beach is beautiful. It is private, roughly 600 meters long, shaded by tropical pines, framed by hills, and almost entirely free of other people. It is also not a reliable swimming beach.
- At low tide the water is too shallow to swim, and the beach is not usable for it
- The sand contains small sharp rocks, which multiple independent reviewers note — water shoes are a reasonable precaution
- High tide is considerably better, and is when snorkeling over the nakalay reef works
In practice, most guests use the beach the way it is best suited: day beds, shade, reading, sunset, and the occasional private barbecue. The swimming happens in the lagoon pool. If you understand that going in, the beach is a genuine asset — a quiet private cove is rarer and more valuable in Phuket than another stretch of swimmable sand. If you arrive expecting to swim in the sea every afternoon, you will be frustrated by day two.

Check the tide tables for your dates before you book. It is a two-minute job and it will tell you what your week actually looks like.
The house reef, which is the real draw
What the beach does offer that almost no Phuket resort can match is the Nakalay House Reef, around 300 meters offshore at five to ten meters depth, reached from the resort pier. You can snorkel it, dive it, or freedive it, and the resort runs a coral conservation center on site.
For anyone who counts being in the water among the things that restore them, this is a better amenity than a swimmable shoreline. A house reef you can reach from your own hotel pier, without a boat trip or a day tour, is a legitimately unusual thing in Phuket. Note that excursions from the pier may carry additional charges depending on your package.
CHANN Wellness Spa
The spa operates as CHANN Wellness Spa, using its own product line.
The award is real, and it is a good one
CHANN was named Best Luxury Wellness Spa at the World Luxury Spa Awards in 2024. I am leading with that one because it is the only recognition here with a name, an awarding body and a year all attached, which is the test I would apply to any such claim. The spa also states more than thirty years of experience.

Facilities and products
The facility is better specified than I expected. Treatment rooms are private, with large windows looking into greenery, and each includes a bathroom, shower room, steam room, jacuzzi and heated treatment bed — that is a proper suite rather than a curtained massage table. There is a steam sauna and jacuzzi in the relaxation area, couples rooms with a shared bathtub, an outdoor massage area, and a beauty salon with separate nail and hair specialists.
The product sourcing is worth knowing, because it is a reliable signal of how seriously a spa takes itself:
- Facials use Jurlique, an established botanical skincare line
- Massage and aromatherapy use HARNN products
- Aromatherapy oils are non-comedogenic and blended by a certified aromatherapist
- Scrubs, baths and the signature cooling oil are CHANN-branded in house
- Facials also incorporate local Thai herbs and botanicals
Signature treatments worth knowing about, beyond the standard massage menu: a CHANN Bamboo Massage, a Thai Clay Salt Pot Massage, Ayurvedic massage, hot stone foot massage, and flower baths. The bamboo and clay salt pot treatments are the two you are least likely to find elsewhere on the island, and both are worth asking about if you want something other than a straightforward Thai massage.
The treatment philosophy is built around the Four Elements — earth, water, wind and fire — drawing on traditional Asian medicine and naturopathy. You will see that framing in the menu, most obviously in the Four Elements Body Scrub inside the CHANN Experience package.
For families: CHANN runs a children’s spa for ages 6 to 10, with guardians who supervise during the visit. That is genuinely unusual, and combined with the lagoon pool and the activity program it strengthens the family case for Thavorn considerably — a parent can book a treatment without it being a negotiation.
Something I did not expect: the spa runs its own day programs
This is the find of the research, and it changes how I would use this property. CHANN sells structured day packages, including ones with yoga built in, and operates a day pass with transfer included. In other words you do not have to stay at Thavorn to use it — you can book a half-day or full-day wellness program and be driven in.
That makes CHANN a genuinely useful option for two groups I had not considered when I started writing this: people staying elsewhere on the island who want a serious spa day in a quiet private bay, and Phuket residents who want a wellness day without booking a hotel at all.
The package list
Prices below are per person for single packages and total for couples, in Thai baht, with the stated pre-discount price in brackets. Everything here is current at the time of writing and worth confirming when you book.
Stay here and save: Hotel guests get 10 percent off at CHANN. On the longer packages that is real money — around 850 baht off Detoxify, or 780 off the 1-Day Wellbeing Retreat — and it is worth factoring into the stay-versus-day-pass decision below. Ask for it at booking rather than assuming it is applied automatically.
Signature programs:

| Detox & Reset | 3 hrs | Yoga session, steam/sauna antioxidant bath, detoxifying massage 60, Indian head massage 30, herbal facial 30 | 6,555 (6,900) |
| Self-Care and Chill | Day | Yoga 60, steam & sauna 30, detoxifying massage 60, Indian head massage 30, herbal facial 30, antioxidant bath 30 | from 6,900 |
| Detoxify | 4.5 hrs | Steam & sauna 30, detoxing body scrub 60, detoxifying massage 60, foot reflexology 30, CHANN detox bath 30 | 8,455 single / 14,155 couple |
| Day Pass Retreat | 3 hrs | Hotel facilities, healthy food, spa treatment, transfer included | 5,690 single / 11,305 couple |
There is also a Relaxing & Pampering workshop package at 4,890 per person for two hours, which includes a 30-minute DIY essential oil blending workshop, a 60-minute relaxing massage and a mini organic facial. That is an unusual thing to find on a resort spa menu and a good option if you want to take something home other than a feeling.
Which ones are actually worth it
A few observations from the pricing structure. The four targeted three-hour programs — Tranquility, Jet Lag Cure, Body & Mind Revival and Discovering Ayurveda — are all 5,310, which means you should choose purely on what you want rather than on price. Of those, Discovering Ayurveda is the most distinctive, since Ayurvedic massage plus Indian head massage is not a combination most Phuket resort spas offer.
Detoxify at 8,455 for four and a half hours is the most treatment time per baht on the menu. Detox & Reset at 6,555 is the one I would pick for readers of this site, because the yoga session makes it the closest thing here to an actual mini-retreat rather than a sequence of treatments.
The Day Pass Retreat is the interesting one strategically. At 5,690 including transfer, facilities access and food, it is a way to spend a day at a private-bay resort without booking a room — and if you are staying somewhere busier in Patong or Kamala, that may be the best value on this page.
One piece of arithmetic worth doing before you decide. Hotel guests get 10 percent off spa packages, so if you are weighing a day visit against a night here, the discount narrows the gap more than you would expect — particularly if two of you are booking treatments, where the saving on a couple package runs well over a thousand baht. If you were already half-considering a stay, the spa economics tip it.
Check the discount math: The Day Pass listing claims a 25 percent saving, but the stated figures — 5,690 against 5,990, and 11,305 against 11,900 — work out to around 5 percent. The other packages’ discounts appear accurate. It is probably a stale promotional label rather than anything deliberate, but compare the numbers yourself rather than the percentage claim, here and anywhere else.
My overall read on the spa
I had written this section as “a good resort spa, not a clinical wellness facility” before I looked properly, and I am revising that upward. A World Luxury Spa Award, Jurlique and HARNN product lines, a certified aromatherapist, private treatment suites with their own steam room and jacuzzi, structured day programs, an Ayurvedic offering and a day pass that does not require a room — that is a day-spa destination operating inside a resort, not an amenity for in-house guests. It is the strongest single component of the property, and it is better than the resort around it would lead you to expect.
What has not changed is the ceiling. There are still no diagnostics, no medical supervision, and no multi-day programs with assessment and follow-up. If you need therapeutic depth — injury rehabilitation, chronic pain, a supervised cleanse — this is not that, and Amity Wellness a few minutes up the coast in Kamala or Atmanjai down in Rawai are built for it. The distinction is between an excellent spa and a wellness program, and CHANN is firmly the former.
Also on site A small but bright fitness center with relatively new cardio equipment, plus a salon.
The daily activity program
This is the heart of the wellness case for Thavorn and the part least well documented online, so it is worth setting out what is on offer.
- Yoga — scheduled daily
- Muay Thai — the resort runs sessions as part of the activity program
- Tai chi — gentle, and genuinely well suited to older guests
- Thai cooking classes
- Beach sports and water activities
- Snorkeling, diving and freediving at the house reef
- Coral conservation center
The combination of tai chi and Muay Thai on the same schedule is unusual and genuinely useful, because it covers both ends of the intensity range. A guest in their sixties can do tai chi and yoga every morning; a twenty-five-year-old in the same family can do pad work in the afternoon. That spread is precisely what a mixed-age group needs and almost never gets.
On the beach yoga, from someone who kept turning up
The yoga is the part of the program I can speak to directly, because for a period I came to Thavorn weekly for a class on the beach. A few things are worth saying about that.
Practicing on sand with the bay in front of you and forested hills on both sides is a materially different experience from a studio, and better in most respects. The light early in the day is lovely, the sound is water and birds rather than air conditioning, and the privacy of the bay means no audience — which matters more than people expect when they are new to practicing outdoors. Sand is also unstable underfoot, which quietly makes balance work harder than it is on a mat indoors; that is a feature, not a problem, but it is worth knowing before you attempt a long standing sequence.

What kept me coming back was not technical instruction. It was the setting and the consistency of having a time and a place to show up. If you are the kind of person who practices better with a scheduled class than alone in a room, that is the real value here, and it is why I am comfortable recommending the program to people who want rhythm rather than progression.
A realistic expectation: these are resort activities, not instruction from a dedicated school. The yoga will be a general class rather than a targeted practice, and the Muay Thai will be fitness-oriented rather than technical. If you want serious training, Phuket has specialist camps for that — Bangtao Muay Thai among them — and you would go there instead. What Thavorn offers is a well-structured active week at no additional cost, which for most people is the better trade.
Rooms and dining
The rooms
Thavorn is a Thai-style property with an older, more traditional character rather than a contemporary design hotel. Cottages are bright and airy with white linens and floral fabrics, and the semi-outdoor bathrooms with large rainhead showers are a highlight. Standard features include air conditioning, flat-screen televisions, and tea and coffee facilities. Most of the hillside zone room types include private balconies with great sea views. They also offer rooms with direct access to the pool.
Be realistic about the age of the property. Independent reviewers consistently note dated furniture in places and occasional maintenance issues, and Wi-Fi has historically not been available in every room. If pristine modern finish is important to you, this is not the right resort and you should look at a newer build. If you value mature gardens, a private bay and 25 acres of space — none of which a new property can manufacture — the trade is worth making.

Dining
Sources disagree on the exact number of outlets, which suggests it has changed recently. The ones that appear consistently:
- AMOR — fine dining at the end of a 300-meter private pier, with indoor and open-air seating and views across to Patong Bay. Also used for weddings. The standout.
- Marisa Terrace — all-day dining and the breakfast buffet, in the garden
- Crocodile Pool Bar & Grill — beachfront, sunset views, a well-regarded happy hour
- Old Siam — upscale Thai in a quiet courtyard, appears in some sources
- Thai Sala — pastries, coffee and cold drinks, reached by a footbridge
- In-villa dining and private beach barbecues, for a fee
Check before you book: Breakfast has historically not been included in the room rate at Thavorn, and that catches people out. Confirm what your rate covers, and if breakfast is extra, price the difference — with limited walkable alternatives nearby, you are a captive customer.
The honest problems
No property review is useful without this section. Here is what I would want to know.
The beach is not reliably swimmable
Covered above, and the most important one. Sharp rocks in the sand, too shallow at low tide. Plan around the lagoon pool and the reef.
A reported odor issue on part of the hillside
This one needs stating carefully. Independent review coverage has reported occasional odors at the property, and that some hillside rooms overlook a nearby waste facility. I have not verified this myself and I do not know whether it remains current. But it appears in independent reviewing rather than guest complaints alone, which is enough that I would not leave it out.
The practical response is simple and costs you nothing: when booking a hillside room, ask the resort directly what your specific room overlooks, and ask to be moved away from the inland side. If you are booking the beach, lagoon or garden zones, this does not arise.
Nothing is walkable
This is a consequence of the private-bay setting and it cuts both ways. The seclusion that makes Thavorn restful also means you cannot walk to a restaurant, a shop or a bar. There is a complimentary shuttle to Patong running three or four times daily depending on the source, and Grab operates in the area. If you want to stroll out for dinner each evening, Kamala proper or Kata would suit you better.
It is an older property
Dated furnishings in places, inconsistent Wi-Fi historically, and a slow funicular. Thavorn trades modern polish for space, gardens and privacy. Know which of those you value more before you book.
Spa and activities are resort-grade, not retreat-grade
Worth repeating, because it is the most likely mismatch for readers of this site. If you want a program with assessment, supervision and a take-home plan, Thavorn is the wrong booking and no amount of daily yoga changes that.
Who it is for
- Mixed-interest groups — one person wants yoga and the spa, another wants a pool and a cocktail. This is Thavorn’s single best use case.
- Families, particularly with young children, given the lagoon pool and the activity program
- Couples wanting a quiet nature-led week rather than a scene
- Divers, snorkelers and freedivers, for the house reef
- Anyone who wants a structured active holiday — daily yoga, tai chi, Muay Thai, cooking — without paying retreat prices
- Travelers who want privacy and space over contemporary design
- People staying elsewhere on the island, or living here, who want a structured spa day — the CHANN day packages and day pass do not require a room booking
Who should book elsewhere
- Anyone who needs a swimmable beach. Kata, Karon or Nai Harn.
- Anyone wanting a genuine wellness program with supervision and structure. Amity Wellness, Atmanjai, TheLifeCo or Layan Life.
- Anyone who wants to walk out to restaurants and bars in the evening
- Anyone for whom modern decor and flawless maintenance are non-negotiable
- Serious Muay Thai students. Go to a dedicated camp.
- Anyone with significant mobility limitations booking the hillside zone
How it compares
| Option | Position | Choose it over Thavorn if… |
| Amity Wellness | Boutique detox | You want an actual supervised program, not a resort with yoga |
| Layan Life by Anantara | Resort medical wellness | You want medical supervision and life-stage programming with resort comfort |
| Keemala / Trisara | Luxury | Design, polish and a spa experience matter more than space and price |
| Atmanjai | Value detox | You want a serious cleanse at a fraction of resort cost |
| Kata or Karon resorts | Mainstream beach | A swimmable beach and walkable restaurants are the priority |
Thavorn’s distinct position: no other Phuket property I know of combines a private bay, 25 acres of gardens, a house reef, a complimentary program spanning tai chi to Muay Thai, and mid-range pricing. The competition either does wellness properly and costs more, or does beach resort properly and offers no program.
Practical planning
When to go
High season is December through March — best weather, highest rates. November and April are the sweet spot: warm, drier than the monsoon, quieter and cheaper. The rainy season from May to October brings the lowest rates and heavy afternoon bursts rather than all-day rain, and the gardens are at their best. One seasonal point specific to Thavorn: reef visibility for snorkeling and diving is generally better in the drier months, so if the house reef is part of why you are going, favor the high and shoulder seasons.
Which zone to book
- Lagoon (THARA) — families, and anyone who will swim daily
- Beach (SINTR) — closest to the sand, the pier and the reef
- Garden (VANA) — quietest, most greenery, flat access
- Hillside (KIRI) — best views, but funicular or stairs; ask what the room overlooks
What to ask when booking
- Is breakfast included in my rate, and what does it cost if not?
- Which zone and which specific room am I in, and what does it overlook?
- What is the current activity schedule, and is everything complimentary?
- What are the tide times for my dates?
- Is Wi-Fi available in my specific room?
- What are the shuttle times to Patong?
- Are pier excursions to the reef included or charged separately?
What to pack
- Water shoes or reef sandals — genuinely useful here
- Your own snorkel and mask if you have them, for the house reef
- Insect repellent — 25 acres of gardens and ponds
- Light layers for early tai chi and yoga sessions
Frequently asked questions
Is Thavorn Beach Village a wellness resort?
It is a wellness-adjacent resort rather than a wellness retreat. There is a spa, a gym, and a complimentary daily program of yoga, Muay Thai, tai chi and cooking classes — enough to build a genuinely active, structured week. There is no assessment, medical supervision, dietary program or take-home plan. If you want those, you want a dedicated retreat.
Can you swim at Nakalay Beach?
Not reliably. The water is too shallow at low tide, and the sand contains small sharp rocks that several independent reviewers mention. High tide is better, and is when the reef snorkeling works. Most guests treat the beach as a place to lounge and swim in the 3,500 sqm lagoon pool instead. Check the tide tables for your dates before booking.
Do I need the funicular?
Only if you book a hillside (KIRI) room. The beach, lagoon and garden zones are flat and need no funicular. The hillside suites have the best views on the property, but the funicular is slow and the alternative is a significant flight of stairs — a real consideration with young children, a stroller, or any mobility or balance issue.
Can I use the spa without staying at the resort?
Yes, and this is one of the more useful things about the property. CHANN sells structured day packages from two to four and a half hours, and a Day Pass Retreat at ฿5,690 that includes transfer, resort facilities access, healthy food and a spa treatment. If you are staying somewhere busier in Patong or Kamala, or you live on the island, that is a way to spend a day in a quiet private bay without booking a room. Note that hotel guests get 10 percent off spa packages, so if you are choosing between a day visit and a night here, run the numbers — the discount closes more of the gap than you might assume.
Which CHANN package should I book?
The four targeted three-hour programs are all priced identically at ฿5,310, so choose on what you want rather than cost — Discovering Ayurveda is the most distinctive of them. For the most treatment time per baht, Detoxify at ฿8,455 for four and a half hours. For readers of this site, Detox & Reset at ฿6,555 is the pick, because the included yoga session makes it the closest thing on the menu to a genuine mini-retreat.
Is it good for families?
Yes, and this is one of its strongest cases. The lagoon pool is the main attraction for children, the activity program gives teenagers something to do, there are family connecting rooms and two-bedroom hillside suites, and the private beach means no crowds. CHANN also runs a children spa service for ages 6 to 10 with supervision, so a parent can book a treatment without negotiating for it. Book the lagoon zone.
Is breakfast included?
Historically not, which surprises people. Confirm what your specific rate includes, and factor the cost in if it is extra — there is little within walking distance, so you have limited alternatives.
How far is it from the airport and from Patong?
Roughly 35 to 45 minutes from Phuket International Airport depending on traffic, about 15 minutes to Patong, and about 5 minutes to Kamala village. There is a complimentary shuttle to Patong several times daily, and Grab operates in the area. Nothing is walkable from the resort.
Is the Muay Thai any good?
It is fitness-oriented resort instruction rather than technical training, which suits most guests perfectly well and is a good way to try the sport. If you want to train properly, book a dedicated camp — Phuket has several excellent ones, and they run beginner tracks.
What about the reported smell?
Independent review coverage has reported occasional odors and noted that some hillside rooms overlook a nearby waste facility. I have not verified this personally and cannot say whether it is still current. The simple precaution is to ask the resort what your specific room overlooks when booking a hillside room, and to request the seaward side. It does not arise in the beach, lagoon or garden zones.
The bottom line
Thavorn Beach Village is the answer to a question I get more often than any other: where can I go in Phuket that gives me yoga and a spa and a healthy rhythm, without making everyone I am traveling with do a program they did not sign up for?
What you get is a private bay, 25 acres of mature gardens, a vast lagoon pool, a house reef off your own pier, and a complimentary daily schedule that stretches from tai chi to Muay Thai. What you give up is a swimmable beach, modern finish, and the depth of a real wellness program.
Book the lagoon or beach zone unless you are fit and want the view. Check the tide tables. Confirm whether breakfast is included. Ask what your room overlooks. Do those four things and you will get the week this resort is genuinely good at.
Disclosure: Phuket Serenity may earn commission on some bookings made through links on this site. I do not own, operate or manage Thavorn Beach Village or any property mentioned here, and nobody pays for placement or a favorable review. This review draws on many visits to the resort over the years, including a period attending a weekly beach yoga class, supplemented by published sources and independent reviewing for the facilities and room categories I have not used personally; where I could not verify a claim, I have said so. Rates, inclusions, activity schedules and facilities change — confirm current details directly with the resort before booking.
